Community Impact Award

James A. “Bud” Cody
Community Impact Award

The James A “Bud” Cody Community Impact Award recognizes individuals who have made an impact in communities via motivation, determination, and innovation. The award is named in honor of James A. “Bud” Cody, who served as Executive Director of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association, Director of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes, and Secretary of the Sheriffs’ Retirement Fund for 46 years.

Bud’s philosophy for making an impact was simple: “If we can have success with this project, then let’s expand the number of projects to do more.” His “can-do” approach to creating local success for a multitude of programs is reason enough to celebrate his work, but his ability to leverage those successes to provide more to a greater population was his gift.

Examples of his success begin with his work with the Boys and Girls Clubs, demonstrating how to elevate programs in Georgia, then carrying that success to New Mexico, and then having his approach adopted on a national level.

Bud employed the same mindset with the Georgia Sheriff’s Boys Ranch. After introducing an accountability process, he pushed to expand from one youth home to four more across the state.
The Youth Homes now provide a haven and education opportunities for thousands of neglected children in Georgia.

He did not stop with Georgia. He provided this method of success, for the Sheriff Associations’ need, nationwide by creating a new organization to provide support to over 30 state associations, resulting in millions of dollars and services for children in need.

The purpose of this award is to recognize those doing tremendous work in their respective communities, motivate them to do more, and provide an example for others to replicate to serve a greater population. We believe helping these successes do more is the best way to honor Bud.
